Bloody April - 1917 is a campaign game from Terry Goodchild’s ‘Wings over France’ rules for solitaire play of WWI aerial combat during the Battle of Arras. Like all the combat of the war the offensive took a terrible toll, but in the air the Allied losses were especially heavy compared to those of Germany. This campaign attempts to recreate that bloody month . . .

ASSIGNMENTS & REPORTS

To the Men of the Amiens Sector:

We are about to undertake a great offensive. It will prove to be a challenge for all of you and your aircraft. Because of the defensive nature of the Hun air strategy we must take the battle to him, which we will do with the utmost vigor. Remember always our primary responsibility is to provide assistance to the ground forces; this is the highest priority, and to do so, we must do everything possible to protect our reconnaissance and observation aircraft. Set forth and do battle knowing that with you are the confidence and heart-felt appreciation of a grateful nation.

NARRATIVE
Defensive Line Patrol
Cpt. Apple and Lt. Ernie took off after a hearty breakfast bound for Albert.  Climbing to 11,000 feet, they spotted an ALB CV being escorted by a D2 and D3 at 9,000 feet respectively.  The CPT gave the signal to attack and both Pups were soon on the Geman two seater with a tail and a climbing attack.  LONG BURSTS and both missed!  The D3 pilot was obviously skilled and after that first pass got Apple in his sights, hitting the CPT's oil line and trailing smoke!  Apple looked for Ernie's Pup, but once again the lad from Liverpool seemed to be nowhere to be found.  Cpt. Apple managed to avoid his attackers the rest of the way, and Ernie joined up with him after the battle at 3,000 feet.  Cpt. Apple motioned to Ernie to continue the patrol on his own.  Apple headed the smoking Pup in the direction of Amiens a straggler . . .

Ernie soon got jumped by the Red Baron over Albert, and soon even more German planes joined in!  Ernie's Pup sustained engine damage courtesy of the Baron - but he escaped a lame duck!

Both Apple and Ernie managed to bring their damaged Pups back to Amiens.
